Capital Bikeshare Hides ‘Golden Keys' to Prizes Under 20 Bikes

Five of the keys hold the lifetime membership prize

As it approaches its 20 millionth ride, Capital Bikeshare hid 20 golden keys under bikes around the city. The prize for finding one could be a lifetime membership to the bike share service.

Five of the keys hold the lifetime membership prize, while the other 15 come with unspecified "fun prizes," the company said.

"This week we are celebrating riders like you that have helped Capital Bikeshare reach this major milestone and made our cities a better place to live," the company said on its website.

Two people found gold keys Tuesday, leaving 18 left to find. One received a Capital Bikeshare 'swag bag' and a 50-percent-off membership coupon. The second winner, a long-time Capital Bikeshare user, found one of the five keys that grants him a free lifetime membership.

Capital Bikeshare is also offering free single rides for new riders who use the company's app now through Friday -- see details here. In addition, in-app purchases, including memberships, are 20 percent off for new users, also through Friday.

The company says people rode more than 42 million miles on its bikes, and this translates to 1.8 billion calories burned, 1.7 million gallons of gas saved and 28.6 million pounds of carbon dioxide reduced.
