Beyonce to Award Scholarships at Howard University, 3 Other Schools

The scholarships are intended to "encourage and support young women who are unafraid to think outside the box"

Beyonce will award college scholarships for women at four schools, including Washington's own Howard University.

The singer announced the "Formation Scholars" program on Tuesday, on her official website.

The scholarships are intended to "encourage and support young women who are unafraid to think outside the box and are bold, creative, conscious and confident," the site says.

Beyonce announced the scholarships upon the first anniversary of the relesae of her album "Lemonade," which won Grammy and Peabody awards.

Female students pursuing degrees in creative arts, music, literature or African-American studies at Howard University and three other colleges are eligible for the scholarship. One recipient will be selected from each participating school.

Spelman College, Berklee College of Music and Parsons School of Design are the three other schools selected for the award.

Details about the scholarship and the application process will be made available from each school.

A representative of the financial aid office at Howard said application information was not yet available.
