The Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery is honoring former first lady Barbara Bush by displaying a photograph of her in the museum's In Memoriam space on the first floor, the institution announced Wednesday.

Former First Lady Barbara Bush died Tuesday at 92. She was the wife of former President George H.W. Bush and the mother to former President George W. Bush.

The portrait, a photograph taken by Diana Walker in 1989, shows the first lady standing on the White House grounds, wearing a black coat and accompanied by her dog Millie.

It will be on view until April 29.

Bush was "admired for her candor and down-to-earth approach to life," the Smithsonian said. During and after her tenure as first lady, she championed efforts to combat illiteracy.
