10 Rescued Sochi Dogs Arrive in D.C.

A touch of the Winter Olympics came to Washington, D.C. Thursday.

Ten rescued dogs from Sochi arrived to the District thanks to a push from U.S. Olympic athletes. The dogs arrived Thursday afternoon at the Washington Animal Rescue League at 71 Oglethorpe St. NW.

During the Olympics, strays could be seen wandering the streets and sidewalks around the Olympic venues and in neighborhoods within the city.

Olympic skier Gus Kenworthy came up with the idea to send the dogs overseas after it became known that local authorities had hired a pest control company to exterminate them.

Shooting stray dogs has been common practice in many Russian regions.

If you want to adopt one of the dogs, they'll soon be available in addition to the rest of the Washington Animal Rescue League's animals.
