WATCH: ‘Star Wars' Trailer Debuts on Monday Night Football

More than just football fans likely tuned in to watch halftime on Monday Night Football this week.

A new trailer for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" debuted during halftime of the New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles game. Tickets also went on sale for the film, opening Dec. 18, during the game.

The trailer began pensively, with a voice asking "Who are you?" as a character explored a desert planet. But the action over the 2:23 trailer rose, bringing with it glimpses of dog fights  of beloved characters Han Solo and Darth Vader's burnt helmet.

The game was broadcast on ESPN, which, like Lucasfilm, is a subsidiary of the Walt Disney Company.

"The Force Awakens," the seventh film in the franchise, is one of the most anticipated of the year. Even its trailer launches have become events in and of themselves. The second teaser trailer (above), which debuted in April, has over 64 million views on YouTube to date.

But advance ticket sales didn't go completely smoothly online. The "Star Wars" link movie ticket sales site Fandango gave users experienced problems for hours.
