HBO, ‘Game of Thrones' Stars Slam Trump Tweet Hijacking Show Iconic Imagery, Language

HBO responded quicker than a horde of White Walkers

Winter is coming. And President Trump is going to need a heavy coat following a frosty reception from HBO.

On Friday, Trump posted a tweet that featured a text overlay reading "Sanctions are coming." The font of the text is a near-match of the style used in HBO's mega-hit "Game of Thrones." And in case the message was lost on anyone the phrase itself imitates "Winter is coming," one of the show's most popular slogans.

HBO responded quicker than a horde of White Walkers.

In a statement to CNBC, HBO said, "We were not aware of this messaging and would prefer our trademark not be misappropriated for political purposes." HBO later added it was planning no additional steps against Trump.

It was not clear from Trump's tweet which sanctions he was referring to. But later that afternoon the White House's official Twitter account attempted to clarify in a follow-up shortly after Trump's tweet that the image was intended to reference sanctions on Iran.

Several stars of the hot show also sounded off, expressing their dismay that the show's messaging had been hijacked for political purposes.

Maises Williams and Sophie Turner, who play sisters Arya and Sansa Stark on the show, let Trump know exactly how they felt about his tweet.

Turner simply tweeted "Ew" to Trump.
