On The Download: Sia Shows She Can Do More Than ‘Breathe'

It’s hard to imagine Sia improving on her incredibly intense “Breathe Me,” which so many of us heard when the song was featured in the series finale of “Six Feet Under.” The song was also used as part of the 2006 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show TV special – a little different than “Six Feet,” but somehow it worked.

I was actually introduced to Sia and “Breathe Me” at the gym. Barry’s Bootcamp – a challenging, fast-paced, one-hour workout in Los Angeles – to be exact. For a long time, after almost every workout, my class trainer, Derek, would play the song as we cooled down and stretched. The tune has a calming affect. When he stopped playing the song as frequently, I went to buy it myself – and I still can’t get enough!

Looking to stay calm, I was eager to hear more and the latest work from this Australian-born singer. Her fourth studio album, “Some People Have Real Problems,” is just as intense and is filled with melancholy, wit and a bit of quirkiness. While her voice could be compared to Dido, Sarah McLachlan and even Fiona Apple, Sia is really just Sia. She’s open, honest, and passionate, which is what makes listening to her so satisfying.

The New York Times said it best when they write about Sia, “she could upstage an elephant at the circus.”
