Glam Slam: The Winter (Skin) Blues

With award season in full swing, there has been a lot of celebrity skin on display — from Angelina’s backless Max Azria at Sunday’s SAG Awards to J.Lo’s cut down to there Marchesa at the Golden Globes.

From what I can tell, dry, winter skin doesn’t exist for these gals. They look as glowy and dewy as ever, despite the fact that we’re in the middle of January! What gives?

We went straight to skin expert Kate Somerville (who works with Debra Messing, Freida Pinto and Kate Walsh) to find out how to keep skin looking star-worthy, despite cold and harsh conditions.

Exfoliate!

“Skin is subjected to the cold, dry weather. Then, you head indoors, strip down and your skin is sucked dry by the indoor heat,” Kate explained. “This can leave a layer of dead and dehydrated skin cells on the surface. It’s crucial to use a gentle exfoliant two to three times a week during the winter months. Look for a scrub that uses enzymes and fruit acids to digest dead skin cells and polish the surface.”

Kate suggests ExfoliKate from her line.

For a beauty bargain option, my pick is St. Ives Apricot Scrub, which is under five bucks and can be found at any drugstore.

Use a humidifier!

Kate suggests preventing dry skin before it happens just by turning on a humidifier at night. It’ll help moisturize the dry air so that you really are getting beauty sleep!

Take more baths!

“The truth is, taking showers can be very drying. I recommend taking a warm bath a few times a week instead of a shower,” Kate said. “Your skin cells have more time while bathing to absorb water.”

She also suggested adding hydrating oils to the bath or even a few cups of goat or whole milk.

“The natural lactose in the milk digests dead skin cells and the proteins seal in moisture and soothe irritations,” Kate said.

Eat and drink right!

“Make sure to boost your intake of Omega oils, especially Omega 3, which most of us just don’t get enough of in our diets,” Kate suggested. “These healthy fatty acids help to lubricate cells.”

Pump up your Omega diet with foods like wild salmon, walnuts and flaxseed.

So what should you stay away from?

“A key point to hydration — make sure you aren’t dehydrating your skin with coffee, sodas and carbonated beverages,” Kate said.
