The United States Postal Service is looking for volunteers to continue the legacy of the annual Operation Santa to make a child’s Christmas wish come true.

The Postal Service is asking the public to adopt letters written by children to Santa and purchase the gifts on the children’s wish lists.

Those interested in adopting letters can visit the main D.C. branch at 900 Brentwood Road NE. Photo identification must be present to adopt a letter.

For organizations wanting to adopt, a representative must be present with an employee identification and a valid state-issued identification card.

Operation Santa has helped children for 102 years. The adoption program began in 1912 when Postmaster Gen. Frank Hitchcock made postal employees and local citizens respond to letters written to Santa.

Although security regulations prevent personal information from being shared, volunteers will receive a copy of a letter of their choice and return to the post office to mail the gift.

Volunteers will be responsible for paying the postage to make the gifts.

Once mailed, employess will match the name and address and deliver the package. For more information on Operation Santa, visit the United States Postal Service site.
