Between a Rock and an Open Mic Night

Are you one of those secretive poetry writers, afraid to admit your hobby lest you be outed as an angsty 16-year-old?

Sometimes you want to go where no one knows your name.

Take, for instance, the Art6 Gallery (6 East Broad St., Richmond, Va.), where poetry readings and open-mic nights come in all colors, shapes and sizes, mixed in with live rock during River City Secrets.

The next one is Friday, Jan. 13 from 7 to 9 p.m., with a $5 cover charge -- and there's no additional fee to sign up to perform. Don't be afraid. You are among friends/strangers (choose whichever makes you less nervous).

Run by its members, Art6 is a nonprofit gallery and performance space that's devoted to creative interaction in the Richmond area. If you're interested in showing off your labors of love, you can become a member.  Members participate in monthly meetings to schedule special events, make decisions and work out a schedule to staff the gallery.

Just don't get drunk with power. OK, not too drunk, anyway. You might slip and reveal your secret hobby to someone around here.
