Trails, Scales and Waterfalls at Cunningham State Park

After less than a 90-minute drive from D.C., you could be fishing, camping, hiking or walking along the tops of the 78-foot waterfalls of Cunningham Falls State Park in Maryland.

Do you have your bag packed yet?

This state park (14039 Catoctin Hollow Road, Thurmont, Md.) is home to a 44-acre lake, picnic areas, a beach and waterfall. Climb up to view the falls from the side or by the boardwalk.

Nine hiking trails surround the park -- each one with different levels of terrain that vary from .5 to 7.5 miles long.

The snack bar and sandy beach by the recreation area allows you to take dip in the lake (hey, summer's not officially over yet!) or launch your boat. Canoes are available for rent at the dock.
