Virginia's Lone State Park Chairlift

If you've ever wanted a reason to go to a state park for a weekend getaway, why not go to the only state park in Virginia with a chairlift? Oh, and the 850-foot limestone tunnel is pretty cool too.

You'll find 'em at Natural Tunnel State Park (1420 Natural Tunnel Parkway, Duffield, Va.), about six hours from the D.C. area.

Despite the distance from most of us, this state park really does have a lot to offer -- besides the chairlift of course. On these 950 acres of public land, you'll find wild cave tours, a 5,400-square-foot pool, camping and cabins.

The deciding factor in whether to make the trip should probably be the 850-foot-long natural limestone tunnel, carved by none other than... nature. Thanks, nature!

Of course Natural Tunnel isa state park, so there are plenty of camping sites, hiking trails and fishing opportunities. Park events -- campfire get-togethers, astronomy programs, guided wildflower walks -- are on schedule each season. If you're there in September, the Papa Joe Smiddy Music Festival is sure to entertain.

Nearby attractions include Southwest Virginia Historical Museum, Bristol Caverns and Bristol International Raceway.
