For those not spending Valentine's Day eating, crying and watching Lifetime (a wonderful way to spend the holiday, incidentally), the Red Fox Inn (2 E. Washington St., Middleburg, Va.) offers a perfect getaway.
The 16-room inn was a social hotspot for colonists during the Revolutionary War and served as headquarters and hospital for confederate soldiers during the Civil War. Today, it's home to an art gallery, tavern and gourmet restaurant.
Built in 1728, the inn is located in a historic town at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains, about an hour west of downtown D.C. Middleburg is home to many boutiques, antique stores and restaurants, and since it's located in the heart of wine country, the inn offers tours of local wineries.
The inn will also feature a four-course Valentine's menu starting Feb. 11. So to avoid being hated by all your single friends, avoid the Lifetime-watching night and book a stay at the Red Fox Inn. Room rates are between $215 and $425. You can check out options for rooms and suites here.
