Pioneer Days Festival: Party Like It's 1879

How did 19th-century Americans settle the west without cars, computers, air conditioning? We know, we know, it's difficult to imagine -- they didn't even have iPads. Sheesh.

Now the town of Marlinton, W.V., is bringing American history back into the present during its 45th Annual Pioneer Days Festival. Experience a taste of the Wild West with western comedies, a carnival, a flea market, tractor pulls, and plenty of demos.

You'll also find live music, horseshoe contests and the mud bog -- add a free ice cream social and/or free watermelon and call it a day.

Marlinton, W.V., is about four hours west of D.C. There are plenty options for lodging around the area.
