Frederick Douglass Day Offers a Slice of History

The life of abolitionist leader Frederick Douglass -- born into slavery in Talbot County, Md. -- is being celebrated with Frederick Douglass Day at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (213 N. Talbot St., St. Michaels, Md.).

The day of events on Saturday, May 5 offers open-fire cooking demos at the Museum’s Mitchell House, which belonged to Douglass' sister, plus live music and exhibits that teach visits about the life of Frederick Douglass, held along the waterfront campus of the museum.
Attend a genealogy workshop to learn a few tidbits about your family's heritage, or watch a ship-building demo at the boat shop, using the same techniques that Douglass himself used.

Visitors will have the opp to make their own copy of Douglass’ newspaper, the North Star. In the vintage photo booth, you can "try on" the clothes and use the tools of a 19th-century free black sailor.

Admission is $10 for adults and free for kids. St. Michaels, Md., is located on the Eastern Shore, about 80 miles from D.C.
