Chili Winter Days in Maryland

Escape the winter chill this January with Chili (nom, nom) Winter Days at Boordy Vineyards (12820 Long Green Pike, Hydes, Md.). Located just 25 minutes from the Inner Harbor, Boordy is home to award-winning wines and a gift shop housed in a 19th-century building.

Weekends in January (21-22 and 28-29), Boordy is celebrating Chili Winter Days. Indulge in hot wassail (hot mulled punch or cider) and feast on three styles of hot chili (beef, pork and vegetarian) paired with six wine samples.

After you've filled your belly enjoy a vineyard tour, sit by the outdoor fire or catch live music in the upper barn. An engraved Boordy wineglass is included with your admission ($15).

Every weekend next month, Sip and Slider events pop up to fill the void left by the dear departed chili days. Munch on sliders (organic pork, charcuterie, veggie and sausage), listen to live music and roast marshmallows outside at the cauldron.

A little background on the vineyard: Boordy grows 40 acres of vines among two different farms; Long Green Vineyard in the Piedmont Plateau and South Mountain Vineyard in the Blue Ridge Province.

Winery hours are Mon.-Sat. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sun. 1-5 p.m. Wine tastings are $5, held throughout the day, and include a Boordy wineglass.

Vineyard manager Ron Wates oversees the vineyard operations and credits sustainablity as one of their objectives. They've reduced their dependency on pesticides for healthy, balanced soils and to provide an environment that is beneficial for plants, animals and insects. They've also placed the farm on permanent preservation with the Maryland Environmental Trust.

And all that healthy stuff means you totally get to get twice as much chili, right?
