Love Letters - and Line Drives - for Literacy

Congressmen Joe Barton (R-Texas) and Mike Doyle (D-Penn.) were honored with the Champions for Literacy Award at the Washington Literacy Council's annual Love Letters for Literacy fundraiser Tuesday evening.

Between readings from local literacy advocates and notable media and political personalities, the reps were fêted for their commitment to the cause. Under their leadership during the last four years, the Congressional Baseball Game for Charity had distributed almost $400,000 to various causes, including the Council's adult literacy efforts.

"I think we picked the Washington Literacy Council as our charity because most of the country thinks that Congress can't read," Barton joked. "But we're really proud to help in this effort. It's not just about reading, it's about becoming a better citizen..."

Here's to books joining baseball as America's favorite pasttime.
