Celebrity Designer Allyson Leak: I Hope to Inspire Women

Jewelry designer Allyson Leak, whose pieces have been seen on celebrities like Alicia Keys and Estelle, was among the female tastemakers honored last night by The Diva Lounge.

"I have been blessed at the age of 27 to find myself and to be grounded through different experiences," Leak said last night at the event held at Policy Lounge.

"When I was trying to figure out how I was going to reach women, I knew it was going to be through a holistic experience."

In the midst of Women's History Month, the Diva Lounge, a women's only newtorking reception in Washington, D.C., honored females for empowering their communities.

In addition to running her jewelry line, Ally Marie Couture, Leak is the creator of a women's empowerment blog called She-Blogs.com.

"I started [the] blog two years ago to inspire women to reach their dreams," said Leak, "and to help them realize that they can lead happy and fulfilling lives."

Dawn Richard, one third of the hip-hop group Dirty Money, was also honored but could not attend the event. Instead, her parents Debbie and Frank Richard accepted the award on her behalf.

"We always knew Dawn was going to be a star," mom Debbie said. "I guess every mother thinks that about their child, but we knew."

Created by XM Radio's Shayna D. and Kimberly Natasha, a law student at Howard University, The Diva Lounge treated guests to complimentary make-up applications, delicious cupcakes from Red Velvet and gift bags.

Other honorees included Yodit Gebreyes, one of D.C.'s top female promoters and Joi-Marie McKenzie, creator of TheFabEmpire.com (and the author of this post).
