GBV Putting Out Another Hundred Songs

They called it quits five years ago, but Guided By Voices is still releasing songs by the hundreds.

The leaders of the lo-fi revolution are releasing their third four-disc, 100-song box set of songs they couldn't squeeze onto earlier releases -- which seemed to come three a year and two dozen songs per during the band's heyday.

More than a decade ago, Chicago Sun-Times critic Jim DeRogatis indie-famously suggested frontman Robert Pollard was too prolific a songwriter. This series of songs saved from cassettes in a suitcase in Pollard's closet suggests maybe he did have an editor after all.

It's practically impossible to keep up with all of Pollard's releases -- GBV, solo or side project -- which makes "Suitcase 3: Up We Go Now" a tough sell, but disc four is a mid-'90s acoustic jam session featuring Pollard, Tobin Sprout and Greg Demos -- all members of maybe the greatest GBV incarnation. That, at least, is very enticing.

Suitcase Tres will be released on Nov. 3.
