Wells Questions D.C. Speed Camera Fines

D.C. Council Member Tommy Wells said he will propose legislation this fall aimed at lowering the speed camera fines.

Wells said he wants to make sure the city's automated enforcement program is about safety and not about revenue.

According to Wells, fines have increased by 250 and 500 percent over the past four years. The Ward 6 council member formed a task force to study how "safety-focused changes can be made to the speed camera program to lower the fines."

The task force will include AAA Mid-Atlantic, the DC Pedestrian Advisory council, as well as other stakeholders.

And while authorities maintain the speed camera program is not about revenue, if Wells is able to pass legislation lowering the fines, the city could potentially have to make up approximately $50 million of speed camera revenue that's been penciled into this year's budget.
