Tempers Flare Over Fairfax County Public Schools Discipline Policy

Tempers flared Monday evening at a Fairfax County School Board meeting over the issue of a revised student discipline policy.

The School Board's discipline policy has been in the spotlight for two years now, since a Woodson High school student committed suicide after being punished for bringing a legal but marijuana-like drug to school.

Nick Stuban's father has been a driving force in efforts to revise the policy. One of his biggest concerns is the fact that he wasn’t immediately notified about the offense against his son, who was suspended and forced to change schools.

Last June, the School Board backed away from a series of proposed changes after principals objected. Since then, a study committee including Stuban and other parents has been at work.

Among their recommendations: Parents be notified quickly when their children face suspensions or expulsions.

But the school district staff rolled out a revised student discipline policy today that did not include the committee recommendation, and that angered several board members.

The policy will be taken up again at a work session in May.

The board is scheduled to vote on a revised policy in June.
