Maryland Budget Committee Cancels Tuesday Meeting

A committee of lawmakers put off meeting to resolve budget proposal differences between the state Senate and House of Delegates.

Warren Deschenaux, the legislature's chief budget analyst, said lawmakers canceled their Tuesday meeting because they are still at odds over differences in the two versions of the budget legislation.

Deschenaux said the lawmakers are largely divided on how to address a revenue package that includes varying attempts to increase the state income tax.

The House version of the plan raises less money than the Senate's tax proposal but would affect fewer taxpayers.

Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller warned legislators Tuesday that to finish the budget they might need to extend the 90-day session, which is scheduled to wrap up April 9.
