Marion Barry Hospitalized After Minor Surgery

D.C. Councilmember and former mayor Marion Barry has been hospitalized for minor surgery.

Barry's office says he's undergoing a procedure Friday involving the urinary tract. The procedure, described as minor, is being performed by Dr. Gauray Bandi at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington.

Barry's chief of staff, Joyce Clements-Smith, says he's expected to be released from the hospital on Saturday. She did not have any details about the ailment that led to the surgery but says Barry is otherwise in good health.

The 75-year-old Barry has survived prostate cancer and had a successful kidney transplant three years ago. He is running for a third consecutive term as the councilmember for Ward 8. He served as mayor from 1979-1991 and again from 1995-1999.
