A majority of members of the D.C. Council are now calling for embattled Council Member Jack Evans to resign after a third-party investigation found that he violated the council's ethics rules 11 times since 2014.
The council-hired law firm O'Melveny & Myers publicly released its investigation into Evans this week. It says Evans repeatedly used his office to benefit private clients who paid him hundreds of thousands of dollars, payments that he failed to disclose or recognize as conflicts of interest.
Evans was paid more than $400,000 over the past five years, the report says.
As of Wednesday afternoon, seven council members publicly called on Evans to step down; five had not said if they think he should resign.
Evans has said he will not step down. His attorneys released a 67-page rebuttal Tuesday saying the law firm's report is flawed and misunderstands council ethics rules.
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser is taking a wait-and-see approach. She said she supports changing the rules so council members cannot earn outside income.
The council will start holding public hearings on the Evans report in about two weeks. Meanwhile, Evans remains the focus of an ongoing federal investigation.
