Early Voting Begins for D.C. Special Election

Early voting is getting underway for a special election in the District of Columbia.

Voters will decide an open at-large seat on the D.C. Council. Also on the ballot is a charter amendment that would allow the city government to spend local tax dollars without Congressional approval.

The budget autonomy amendment is expected to pass easily. In the council race, voters will choose between seven candidates.

Interim Councilmember Anita Bonds, a Democrat, is running for the seat. Her challengers are Democrats Matthew Frumin, Elissa Silverman and Paul Zukerberg; Republican Patrick Mara; and Perry Redd of the D.C. Statehood Green Party.

Democrat and former councilmember Michael A. Brown has suspended his campaign but remains on the ballot.

Early voting starts Monday and runs through Saturday, April 20, at One Judiciary Square.

The election is scheduled for April 23.
