DC Vote Targets Rep. Franks Over D.C. Autonomy

Franks wants to ban late-term abortions in D.C.

DC Vote is taking its message to Arizona.

The advocacy group organized a protest outside the Glendale offices of Congressman Trent Franks, who is proposing to ban late-term abortions in the District.

Franks, a Republican who chairs the House Judiciary's subcommittee on the Constitution, is the lead sponsor of a bill that would make it illegal for doctors in D.C. to perform abortions after 20 weeks.

More than two dozen demonstrators participated, but DC Vote's James Jones, who travelled to Arizona to organize the protest, said the fight isn't about abortion but about autonomy.

"It's a fight about a guy we didn't elect -- who is unaccountable to the people of the District of Columbia -- imposing his will upon us," Jones said.

As part of the protest, DC Vote has launched an ad campaign in Arizona and in D.C. that features the congressman in a hotdog costume with the tag line "Congressman Franks Don't Be a Weiner. Stay out of D.C."
