Medical marijuana is legal in D.C. — But city employees with prescription cards could still lose their jobs if they use it.
"People are not getting the jobs they are applying for simply because they have a medical marijuana card," Council Member David Grosso said. "I think some people also lost their jobs."
The District does test employees for marijuana, concerning councilmembers that medical marijuana users are being discriminated against.
"I think somebody that qualifies for medical marijuana, who has a card, should not then have their job in jeopardy," council chairman Phil Mendelson said.
The D.C. Council was expected to approve an emergency bill on Tuesday that would have protected workers from being fired for legally using medical marijuana, but it was abruptly pulled by Grosso, who sponsored the proposal.
Mayor Muriel Bowser and others worry about allowing workers in safety-sensitive jobs to use medical pot.
The legislation is set to be brought up again later this month with some changes. D.C. employees could face termination in the next 30 days.
