DC Police Captain Charged With DUI After Crash

A Metropolitan Police Department captain was charged with driving under the influence after he crashed his car in Southeast D.C., police say.

Capt. Paul Shelton, a 30-year veteran of the department, was driving southbound on I-295 near Pennsylvania Avenue SE when he crashed into another vehicle, D.C. police said. He was charged with DUI. No one was injured, police said.

Shelton, a captain in the Seventh District, was off-duty and driving his personal car, not a police vehicle, police said.

He is on revoked-duty status, without police powers.
