Cuccinelli, McAuliffe Pay Visit to Wilder's Class

Republican Ken Cuccinelli and Democrat Terry McAuliffe have brought their gubernatorial campaigns one-after-the-other into the Virginia Commonwealth University classroom of former Gov. Doug Wilder.

Cuccinelli unfurled a generalized package of higher education reforms to Wilder's advanced government and politics class Thursday, while McAuliffe treated them to his standard stump spiel about economic development, including how he started a driveway sealing business as a 14-year-old in his native upstate New York.

Cuccinelli, the current attorney general, lamented tuition increases that are pricing college degrees out of the middle class's reach. He proposed low-cost science, technology, engineering and math degrees.

McAuliffe touted greater use of Virginia's community colleges as training partners for business. He also praised Wilder for his tight-fisted state government fiscal stewardship during the wrenching recession of the early 1990s.
