University of Maryland Football Player Dies After Illness Following Team Workout

A University of Maryland football player has died after he was hospitalized following an organized team workout in late May.

Jordan McNair, an offensive lineman preparing for his sophomore season, died Wednesday, the university announced in a letter. He was 19.

"We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of one of our student athletes, sophomore football player Jordan McNair," Executive Athletic Director Damon Evans said in the letter.

"Jordan was a tremendous athlete, student, teammate and friend, and he will be sorely missed," Evans continued.

McNair was sent to a hospital after a team workout on May 29, the letter said. Additional details on what happened were not released immediately.

McNair was a graduate of McDonogh School in Owings Mills, Maryland. He played one game last season.

After leading McDonogh to an 8-3 record as a senior, McNair chose Maryland over Ohio State, Auburn, Penn State and Rutgers.

Maryland Coach DJ Durkin said McNair was a joy to have on the team.

"Jordan was a hard worker, and he always had a smile on his face," Durkin said in the letter sent by the university. "He was an extremely talented football player and a humble and genuine human being. He embodied the essence of what it means to be a teammate."
