One Year Later, Death of UMD Football Player Jordan McNair Marked with Health Clinic

What to Know

  • The University of Maryland says it hired a new coach, Michael Locksley, who was just named top assistant coach in the country
  • Locksley is currently the offensive coordinator at The University of Alabama, but has coached for Maryland twice before
  • The school fired football coach DJ Durkin and athletic trainers after the death of a player in June

Thursday marks one year since University of Maryland football player Jordan McNair died.

The 19-year-old died two weeks after suffering heatstroke during a football workout.

Maryland coaches and players will participate in a health and wellness sports clinic in honor of McNair on Thursday. They want to increase awareness about heat-related illnesses.

UMD football players will head to McNair's former high school, McDonogh, to do physical activities, learn about heat stroke and share stories about their teammate. The event targets local youth players ages 8-13.

An independent investigation into McNair’s death determined that trainers at the scene did not follow proper procedures and were ill prepared for health emergencies.

Those trainers and the head coach, coach D.J. Durkin were fired.
