Nationals Acquire Denard Span From Twins

The Washington Nationals acquired centerfielder Denard Span from the Minnesota Twins Thursday in exchange for minor-league pitcher Alex Meyer.

Span, a D.C. native, hit .283 with 38 doubles and 41 RBIs in a leadoff role for Minnesota in 2012. Over 96 percent of Span's at-bats in the majors have been at the top or the order. He has been on the Nationals' radar for quite some time; rumors swirled last summer that the Nats were considering trading closer Drew Storen to the Twins for Span's services.

Span's acquisition will allow Bryce Harper to move to a corner outfield position, which could spell the end of Adam LaRoche in Washington if Michael Morse moves from left field to first base.
