Georgetown, China Combatants Won't Meet Again

There is some buzz in the media surrounding the AP mention that Georgetown and Bayi, whose Thursday brawl made international headlines, will “play each other again on Sunday in Shanghai.” But according to Georgetown sources, that game will not take place.

The Hoyas schedule had been changed prior to Thursday’s incident and the team had already planned to face the Liaoning Dinosaurs, as personally confirmed to us by Georgetown Sports Information Director Mike Carey, as well as listed on the Hoyas website.

Hooray for fact checking.

PopSop.com is also reporting that “Georgetown University will fight against the Liaoning Men’s Basketball Team in an exhibition game”, although they might want to take a second look at their wording.

The reaction to the brawl has been mixed, although most of it has been very supportive of the young Georgetown team and its staff for how they handled a very scary situation. Former Georgetown players took to Twitter to show their support, and the general tone in the media has been sympathetic to the college athletes.

Of course there are always a few clowns, like former Wizard Gilbert Arenas, who lost a little perspective and made some very unfortunate jokes.

Controversy aside, both teams have made steps to put the incident behind them. On Friday, coach John Thompson III, senior Jason Clark and junior Hollis Thompson met with Bayi Coach Adejiang to make nice. Chinese Vice Foreign Minsiter Cui Tiankai said that the meeting went well and that the two teams “exchanged souvenirs.”

It’s nice to know the Hoyas will be returning from China with more than just bruises.
