Now that Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin is done playing hockey for the next few months -- the Caps lost in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but Team Russia won the World Championships -- he has some free time on his hands.
After helping Russia win last week's tournament, Ovechkin mentioned that he was headed to France. Thanks to his Twitter page, we know why.
Ovechkin is accompanying his girlfriend, tennis pro Maria Kirilenko, to the French Open, which began earlier this week with qualifying rounds.
Kirilineko is the 16th-ranked woman in the tournament and will begin play at Roland Garros against France's Victoria Larriere. If you don't have a rooting interest in the tournament, then I guess you have one now.
I just hope for several shots of Ovechkin sitting in the crowd cheering his sweetheart on. Talk about a trophy boyfriend, am I right?
