1st Look Loves: Clams, Brews and Carousels in Greenport, NY

On the East Coast, the beach season may be coming to a close, but there’s still nothing like enjoying the ocean breeze on a beautiful fall day. Greenport, NY on Long Island is a popular summer destination for people looking for boating and fishing, to enjoy fresh seafood and happy hours along the docks, and where there’s plenty of delicious homemade ice cream to go around for blocks! Also, it’s an easy place to get to, whether by car or train from NYC, or by ferry from Connecticut and Southern Long Island.

But in the fall, a trail of pumpkins, hayrides, and vineyards, is what leads you into this off-season boating town, where locals are still inviting visitors to enjoy the sights and scenes of Greenport. Here’s our list of some of the best stops in town:

Wine & dine at Claudio’s Clam Bar
This dockside venue is home to locals and visitors alike. Ride right up with your boat or walk up from the ferry, train, or neighboring streets. There’s always local live music, great drinks, and delicious food. What we recommend: the lobster roll, mahi mahi reuben, and any of the chowders. Finally, top it all off with a margarita or bloody.

Take a sip of the Greenport Harbor Brewing Company
Beer is a-brewing at this former neighborhood firehouse on Carpenter Street. And whether you come knowing you’re drinking the #2 Lager all afternoon or want to try the best of them, this is the place for any and all beer drinkers, beginners and experts alike. What we recommend:  Take the tour--for $8, you receive a GHBC souvenir glass and a taste of all 8 beers on tap. The crowd favorites from this past weekend: #2, Black Duck Porter, and the Summer & Pumpkin Ales.

Don’t leave without a ride on the Antique Carousel
Built in 1920, this vintage carousel on Front Street in Mitchell Park is fun for people of all ages. For just $2, take a ride on this Greenport staple until 10PM on off-season weekends and holidays, weather permitting.
