Spring is almost over, but where is the heat?

Monthly average temperatures were below normal for April and May.

Last year, the District recorded the first 90-degree day May 12. The month was recorded as the warmest May on record since 1991.

This was the first time since 2009 we didn’t reach 90 in May.

As cool temperatures continue, umbrellas are a must. The District has seen rain, rain and more rain. Fifteen consecutive rainy days were recorded from April 27 to May 11.

Last June, the temperature reached 90 degrees 12 days, which is the most since 2010. NWS predicts slightly above normal temperatures in this region for the month.

The District can expect to follow the warm trend as the month has started with temperatures around the mid-80s, but we have yet to report any 90 degree days.

The June 1, 2015, maximum high was 92 degrees. This year, 87 degrees was recorded.

Based on past weather events in the region, severe weather may also be in the forecast for the month.

    • June 27, 2015: Two EF-1 tornadoes were confirmed in southern Maryland.
    • June 20, 2015: An EF-0 tornado was confirmed in Frederick County, Maryland.
    • June 8, 2014: An EF-1 tornado was confirmed in Berkeley County.
    • June 13, 2013: Six tornadoes were confirmed in the DC-Baltimore metro region.
    • June 10, 2013: Four tornadoes were confirmed across northern Maryland.
    • June 29, 2012: A derecho struck the DC-Baltimore metro region.

The trend of the past few years forecasts the possibility of a tornado or derecho in the near future.
