Severe Thunderstorms Rip Through DC Area

Severe thunderstorms left paths of damage around the D.C. area Friday.
A severe thunderstorm with strong rotation was detected near New Market after 2 p.m. Friday, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a tornado warning until 2:45 p.m. for western Carroll County and east central Frederick County in Maryland.
In Finksburg, Md., about 15 homes were damaged by a potential tornado. The National Weather Service has not confirmed a tornado.
Several severe thunderstorm warnings were issued around the D.C. area Friday afternoon. Wind gusts up to 60 mph were reported near Clarksburg, Md. And the wind was clocked at 74 mph in Frederick County.
Fallen trees have been reported, including one that blocked Interstate 66 in both directions in Rosslyn until it could be cleared.
Nine large hardwoods fell near Mount Airy in Carroll County.
Several fallen trees were reported in Frederick County. Homes and trees were damaged in Ijamsville.
A severe thunderstorm watch for the D.C. area has been cancelled.
People should go to the basement or an interior room and stay away from doors and windows until the storms pass. If you are outside when a storm comes and can't find shelter, find a low spot away from trees.
Because of rain and poor visibility, two-way operations on the Bay Bridge have been suspended and drivers were warned to expect eastbound delays during the evening rush hour. One lane on the eastbound span is open while the right lane remains closed for repairs.
