Information for Bladensburg Residents Impacted by Microburst

Information on inspections, shelters, and how to help

Prince George's County has released the following information following Friday's microburst that hit Bladensburg, Md.  Please see the press release below for information on who to contact if your home was damaged, and how you can help those who are displaced:


The County continues recovery efforts following a microburst Friday evening in the Bladensburg and Cheverly communities. As the County assesses damages and determines whether it meets the threshold for a Declaration of Emergency in order to receive federal assistance, it requests all residents impacted in the towns of Bladensburg and Cheverly as well as any nearby areas of this microburst to call the Emergency Operations Hotline at 301-583-2230 in order for them to inspect structural damage. Please note, the County is looking for residents with structural damage only in areas within the vicinity of the microburst.

The County’s Department of Environmental Resources have inspected 126 structures, deeming 21 to be unsafe and uninhabitable. Residents cannot return to these structures until repairs are completed. The Prince George’s County Office of Family Services, Department of Social Service, and the American Red Cross will continue to operate the shelter at Bladensburg High School, 4200 57th Avenue. Food and updated information are available for impacted residents. County staff is reaching out and working with all displaced residents to find housing solutions. Last night the shelter housed approximately 20 residents with additional residents using the shelter for food and updated information. The shelter will remain open again tonight and any resident needing assistance, information or shelter, should call the Prince George’s County Emergency Operations Hotline at 301-583-2230.

Financial contributions can be made through a special fund established for those impacted. The fund will assist with food replacement, housing assistance, emergency assistance clothing and emergency housing assistance. The Finance Office of the Prince George’s County Department of Social Services will accept the donations at: 805 Brightseat Road, Landover, MD 20785. Please make checks or money orders payable to: Prince George’s County Department of Social Services and note in the memo section “Bladensburg Microburst Lay Fund”).

In addition, the following items are being requested and can be delivered beginning Monday, June 25th - Friday, June 29th from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. at 425 Brightseat Road, Landover, MD 20785. The items donated will go directly to the families impacted and displaced by the storm.

  • Pantry food items that are non-perishable.
  • Summertime seasonal new or near new clothing (men’s, women’s and children’s clothing) - folded and placed in boxes.

Furniture items cannot be accepted at this time, however, will be coordinated with community members wishing to donate. Those wishing to donate furniture or appliances are asked to contact the Prince George’s County Department of Social Services at 301-909-7000.

Prince George’s County also thanks the American Red Cross for their assistance and always being available to the County in our times of need. Residents impacted by the high winds from the microburst in Bladensburg and Cheverly may dispose of storm-related debris at the Brown Station Road Sanitary Landfill and the Prince George’s County Yard Waste Composting Facility, free of charge, beginning Monday, June 25 through Friday, June 29, 2012. Residents may enter the Brown Station Road Sanitary Landfill at the 11611 White House Road in Upper Marlboro between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to dispose of their storm-related debris to include brush, tree limbs, roofing materials, siding and other damaged household items. The Prince George’s County Yard Waste Composting Facility, located at 6601 E. Crain Highway in Upper Marlboro (from Crain Highway, proceed on Maude Savoy Brown Road and follow signs to the facility), will be open for residents to dispose of their storm-related brush and tree limbs only from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Verification of County residency will be required upon entering the Brown Station Road Sanitary Landfill and the Prince George’s County Yard Waste Composting Facility. Commercial vehicles will be charged according to the normal disposal rates. The Prince George’s County Department of Public Works and Transportation has been and will continue to remove debris from roadways. DPW&T is also reporting that all roads in the impacted area are now open. Additionally, DPW&T is providing transportation services to those impacted to and from the Bladensburg shelter.
