The steamy weekend heat continues.
The District activated a hyperthermia alert around 2:40 p.m. as the heat index reached 96 degrees.
Earlier Monday, the National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for the entire D.C. metro area for Monday from noon to 9 p.m. The heat index was expected to reach the mid to upper 90s.
Those spending time outside should be mindful of the heat index and alter plans accordingly, the weather service said. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, and drink plenty of water. And don't forget the sunscreen.
There's also the potential for isolated thunderstorms during the late afternoon and evening, said NBC4 meteorologist Tom Kierein. The region has a 30 percent chance for t-storms between 4 and 9 p.m.
