Hampton Declares Emergency for Tornado-Hit Areas

Tornado caused more than $4.3 million in damage

A local emergency has been declared for areas in Hampton affected by a tornado.

The tornado that struck Friday caused more than $4.3 million in damage. But city officials said they don't believe the damage will meet the required levels for state or federal assistance.

City Council will consider at its next meeting a proposal to waive permit fees for residents repairing damage.

Virginia Secretary of Public Safety Marla Decker and state emergency management coordinator Michael Cline viewed the damage in Hampton on Monday. They also visited Petersburg, which also was hit by a tornado.
