Heavy Rain, Strong Winds Leave Damage Across DC Area

Heavy downpours, lightning and strong winds caused power outages and damage to homes and buildings throughout the D.C. area Wednesday night.

Storm Team4 declared a Weather Alert Day and a flash flood watch was in effect for the entire region.

A flash flood warning is in effect for Baltimore City until 6 a.m.

The storms began moving into the western edge of the region at about 6 p.m. and moved across the D.C. area over the subsequent few hours.

Damage, Power Outages

D.C. Fire and EMS officials said part of a roof has been blown off of a four-story apartment building at 1131 K Street SE.

About 50 people were taken out of the building and are not allowed to return. No one was injured, fire officials said.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesman Pete Piringer said there have been several reports of lightning strikes, heavy rain and some flooding in the county.

In Prince George's County, lightning struck a home in the 7100 block of Matthew Street in Greenbelt, causing a fire, officials said. The fire has been put out and there were no injuries.

As of 5 a.m. Thursday, Pepco reported 381 customers are without power.

More than 1,800 are without power in Northern Virginia, according to Dominion Power.

The downpours led to some localized flooding, causing ponding of water in low-lying areas.
