Cooling Centers Open Around Region

With the heat wave continuing and hundreds of thousands of people still without power, D.C. Montgomery County, and Prince George's County have opened cooling centers to help people get as much relief as they can.

High temperatures will approach the mid-90s on Monday.

In the District, 38 senior cooling centers, 20 outdoor pools, 10 spray parks, and 5 indoor pools are among the facilities that will be opened this weekend. A full list can be found here.

Three of the six D.C. facilities that have opened as cooling centers will remain open until 7 a.m. Monday for residents who still do not have power:

• Ward 5 - North Michigan Park Recreation Center 1333 Emerson Street NE

Several libraries are open as cooling centers from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday:

• Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library (901 G Street NW)
• Anacostia Neighborhood Library (1800 Good Hope Road SE)
• Dorothy I. Height/Benning Neighborhood Library (3935 Benning Road NE)
• William O. Lockridge/ Bellevue Neighborhood Library (115 Atlantic Street SW)
• Tenley-Friendship Neighborhood Library (4450 Wisconsin Avenue NW)

Rockville officials announced the following cooling centers for Monday:

• The Lincoln Park Community Center (11 a.m. to 7 p.m.)
• Thomas Farm Community Center, 700 Falls Grove Drive (11 a.m. to 7 p.m.)
• Rockville Swim and Fitness Center, 355 Martins Lane (11 a.m. to 7 p.m.)
• The Senior Center  (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.)

Prince George's County officials released the following list of cooling centers (updated 5 a.m. Monday):

Laurel opened a shelter at the Robert J. DiPietro Community Center, 7901 Cypress Street. The shelter is open now and will remain open until 6 a.m. Monday. Residents may use the shelter to get relief from high temperatures and humidity as well as to re-charge electronics.

In Frederick, Md., the Giant Eagle Stores in the Frederick Shopping Center and at 1275 West Patrick Street on the Golden Mile are participating in the Potomac Edison free water and ice program, giving customers one bag of ice and two gallons of water at no charge.

Arlington County, Va., has opened the following cooling centers Monday:

• Barcroft Sports and Fitness Center 8am-10:30pm
• Carver Community Center 9am-9pm
• Charles Drew Community Center  3pm-9pm
• Fairlington Community Center 8am-9pm
• Gunston Community Center 2pm-9pm
• Langston-Brown Community Center 9am-10pm
• Lee Community Center 9:30am-6pm
• Madison Community Center 9am-9pm
• Thomas Jefferson Community Center 6am-10pm
• Walter Reed Community Center  8am-10pm

Dulles Town Center will remain open overnight again for Loudoun County residents who were without power. Pets are welcome if they are in carriers. Galilee United Methodist Church at 45425 Winding Road in Sterling is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The county also encouraged residents to seek relief at community centers and libraries but to call ahead to make sure the nearest facilities have power.

In Fairfax County, these rec centers were opened Sunday for those without power and others seeking relief from the heat:

• Lee District RECenter, 6601 Telegraph Road, Franconia (8 a.m. to 8 p.m.)
• Mount Vernon RECenter, 2017 Belle View Blvd., Alexandria (8 a.m. to 6 p.m.)
• Oak Marr RECenter, 3200 Jermantown Road, Oakton (9 a.m. to 8 p.m.)
• South Run RECenter, 7550 Reservation Drive, Springfield (7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.)
• Cub Run RECenter, 4630 Stonecroft Blvd., Chantilly (8 a.m. to 8 p.m.)

The centers allowed people to recharge mobile devices, and those wishing to shower may do so for $2 per person.
