Metro to Test Paying Fares With Electronic Devices

Metro will test a program to allow riders to pay fares with their electronic devices.

Several Metro stations and bus routes will be involved in the pilot program beginning in January. New fare gates and technology will allow payment via next-generation smartphones, NFC-enabled watch, contactless credit and debit cards, and Federal ID cards.

Metro will begin installing equipment in October. It will soon begin recruiting riders to participate in the test run.

  • Gallery Place (7th & F)
  • Farragut West
  • Navy Yard
  • Suitland
