Lanes Closed on Route 28 in Va. After Tanker Truck Crashes, Spills Hot Tar

Lanes will be closed into Monday evening after tanker truck spilled hot tar and diesel across the roadway Monday on Route 28.

The single-vehicle crash about 9:15 a.m. Monday in Loudon County, Virginia State Police said. The truck was carrying hot tar in its tank, which ruptured when the vehicle overturned. Its fuel tanks were also damaged and their contents spilled across the roadway.

The driver suffered minor injuries.

The spill is contained, but cleanup of tar and diesel has closed lanes on Route 28 northbound near the Route 606 ramp. Lane closures are expected to remain until at least 6 p.m. Monday.
