Northbound Mass. Ave. Closed in Montgomery County Due to Broken Water Main

Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission said water is back on for all residents affected by a 12-inch main break along Massachusetts Avenue in Montgomery County.

Officials said the service was restored around 2 p.m. Saturday. Crews are currently backfilling the hole, and work is expected to be finished Saturday night.

The northbound lanes of Massachusetts Avenue remain closed. The break at Massachusetts and Westmoreland Circle about 4 p.m. caused the closure through Duvall Drive.

Motorists should try to avoid the area. Every road in the area that could be used as a cut-through was gridlocked during rush hour, News4's Jackie Bensen reported. Residential streets not wide enough for two cars to pass each other became clogged with long lines of traffic.

The broken 12-inch main, which was installed in 1934, caused the roadway to buckle.
