Beltway Partially Closed in Virginia; 2 Tons of Marble Countertops Tumbled Off Truck

The Beltway was partially closed in Northern Virginia for hours Tuesday evening after a semitrailer overturned and dumped more than 2 tons of marble countertops into the roadway, officials say.

The truck overturned about 5:55 p.m. in southbound lanes of I-495 near Route 7 in Tysons, Virginia, blocking all southbound express lanes plus two regular lanes headed south, state police said. About 4,800 pounds of marble countertops fell onto the highway.

After the truck overturned, three cars crashed. Miraculously, no one was hurt.

All lanes had reopened by 10:30 p.m., but cleanup continued.

The cause of the initial crash is under investigation.
