Before You Go All In: Guide to Getting to the MGM National Harbor Casino

Traffic may be increasing around the brand new casino, but a little planning will help your trip run smootly.

So, you want to check out the new MGM National Harbor resort and casino... but how do you get there? If you live in D.C., it might seem like a daunting task to get out to National Harbor. Even if you're not far, you may not want to deal with traffic or feel apprehensive about parking.

We've broken down what you need to know if you plan to test your luck at the tables, see a show or just relax in the massive resort after it opens Thursday night.

By car:

If you opt to drive there, here's the address for your GPS: 101 Harborview Ave., Oxon Hill, Maryland.

It's free to park your car yourself during the casino's opening period, although you'll have to pay in the future. The casino has a massive underground parking garage with five entrances and exits.

Valet parking is available 24 hours a day; it will cost $25 for up to 12 hours and $45 for 12 to 24 hours. Guests staying at the hotel who use valet parking will be able to drive in and out as they wish.

Taxi:

You can always take a taxi if you don't want to drive yourself. Use the designated pickup and dropoff area on Hotel Drive to call an Uber or Lyft. MGM has also partnered with Uber to offer guests the opportunity to share their ride with someone else.

Metrorail, Metrobus & The Bus:

If you're coming from D.C., you may not want to break the bank on a taxi rode. But if no one volunteers for DD duty, you can always take public transportation. You can catch Metrobuses that will take you to the casino directly from two different Metro stations.

From the King Street Metro station (Blue and Yellow lines), you can take the NH2 Metro Bus four stops to the MGM National Harbor stop. This is a new bus line implemented by Metro in October.

From the Southern Avenue Metro station (Green Line), take the NH1 Metro Bus four stops to the MGM National Harbor stop.

If you're coming from nearby, you can take TheBus, Prince George's County's bus service. Routes 35 and 35s have stops near the casino. Route 35 also comes from the Southern Avenue Metro station. TheBus accepts payment in cash or via SmarTrip card; fares are $1.25.

Water Taxi:

If you're feeling adventurous and want to take the scenic route, travel to the resort via water taxi. The Potomac Riverboat Company offers water taxis from Alexandria and the National Mall to National Harbor.
