AAA Predicts Decline in Va. July 4th Travel

AAA expects more than 1.1 million Virginians to travel at least 50 miles from home to celebrate Independence Day.

That's about 1.4 percent lower than in 2012. The auto club says the decline is due to a shorter holiday period. This year's holiday period runs from Wednesday to Sunday.

AAA Mid-Atlantic says about 84 percent of Virginia travelers will be traveling by car.

The shorter holiday period and higher gas prices than a year ago have many Virginia motorists staying close to home. One third of those traveling will remain within 150 miles radius of their home town.
