Metro Announces Revised SafeTrack Surge Dates

Schedule Announced for 10th and 11th Surges

What to Know

  • Metro has announced an updated SafeTrack plan through the end of 2016.
  • The plan concerns surges 10 and 11 of the 15 surge plan.
  • The updated schedule affects the Red Line, Silver Line and Orange Line.

Metro announced an updated SafeTrack schedule for the remainder of 2016 that will affect the Red, Orange and Silver lines.

The plan for the ongoing initiative to repair Metrorail tracks and structures was altered in mid-August because of this summer’s heat and humidity.

Today’s update concerns the 10th and 11th surges of the 15-surge plan and is in line with the earlier schedule adjustments.

Metro announced the following schedule:

SURGE 10: Oct. 29 - Nov. 22

There will be no Red Line service between Fort Totten and NoMa-Gallaudet stations during surge 10. Buses will operate between Fort Totten, Brookland, Rhode Island Ave and NoMa. Additionally, Red Line trains will operate less frequently than normal at all stations. Riders are encouraged to use the Green Line instead of the Red Line between Fort Totten and Gallery Place or to travel outside of rush hour.

SURGE 11: Nov. 28 - Dec. 21

Trains will single track between East Falls Church and West Falls Church stations, affecting service on both the Orange and Silver lines in this location. Trains will run every 16 minutes at all times. Heavy rush hour traffic is expected.

Though a detailed schedule for 2017 surges will be announced in December, Metro has updated their outline for track work in 2017.

The outline is as follows:

Early January 2017: Single tracking and weekend shutdowns from Braddock Road to Huntington on the Blue and Yellow Lines

Late January - Early February 2017: No service from Rosslyn to Pentagon on the Blue Line.

March 2017: Single tracking and weekend shutdowns from Braddock Road to Huntington on the Blue and Yellow Lines.

Late March - April 2017: Single tracking and weekend shutdowns from Greenbelt to College Park on the Green Line.
