Most shoppers are familiar with Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but there's a new phenomenon to the sales frenzy in the days after Thanksgiving, and some say minority business owners stand to benefit the most on Small Business Saturday.
The movement, now in its second year, aims to drum up support for local businesses and neighborhood shops.
There's a growing number of Latino business owners, said Ash Kosiewicz, of the Latino Economic Development Corporation, and in an ethnically diverse area like the D.C. metro region, that isn't much of a surprise.
The latest numbers released from the Census Bureau about a year ago showed that Latino owners were opening small businesses at a rate of three times as fast as local businesses overall.
The Mount Pleasant neighborhood in northwest D.C. and Wheaton, Md., just outside of the District, are where Latino shop owners will likely thrive Saturday, Kosiewicz said.
"The Mount Pleasant community continues to be one area where Latinos have important small businesses," Kosiewicz said. "[In] other areas like Wheaton, you're starting to see growing Latino populations, about 40 percent."
According to Kosiewicz, Latinos own about one in five small businesses in the U.S.
